Finding a pool with a solid block of Saturday morning lane swim sessions is a rarity, Alfreton Leisure Centre - well done! The timetable currently stretches from early morning opening right through to midday – plenty of time to fit in a decent session at a convenient time of the week!

The leisure centre itself is busy, but looking through the glass wall separating reception from the pool deck, I can see that aside from one lane dedicated to swim lessons, the pool is relatively empty. Perfect.

I jump in and get started – and to my delight, I pretty much have a lane to myself for the entire hour. It’s a rare luxury, and I make the most of it.

From what I understand, this pool has been open for over sixteen years, yet it looks brand new. If that’s correct, huge credit to the staff here – the pool and facilities are absolutely spotless.

This swim was a spontaneous stop on my way back from Sheffield, where I spent last night watching The Wildhearts at The Leadmill. My ears are still ringing, and let’s just say I didn’t get an early night! I originally planned a quick dip, but the pool was so good I ended up staying for a full 3.3km set.

Swim done, it’s back in the car and heading south on the A38, enjoying the sunshine – but not before a quick McDonald’s pit stop in Derby for a well-earned bacon and egg McMuffin.
